Makalu (8,481m), the fifth highest mountain in the world lies on the Nepal Tibet border. The trek provides a high mountain feel with sherpa settlements and some outstanding vistas of major peaks to the east of Everest.

From Tumlingtar we trek a long way up the Arun River valley past some beautiful farmhouses along with small temples and gompas and extremely colourful vegetation flowers. Many different ethnic groups live here. We continue on to Seduwa and Num to cross the Barun La (4110 meters) to enter the upper Barun Khola Valley for the close up views of Makalu (8463 meters) and Chamlang (7317 meters). The trekking is not particularly difficult although one should keep in mind it is a long trek.
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be greeted by a representative from Champawati Tours and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, you can relax or explore the bustling streets of Thamel.
Today, you’ll visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swayambhunath. In the evening, there will be a briefing and final preparation for the trek conducted by the Champawati Tours team.
Take a scenic flight to Tumlingtar followed by a drive through picturesque hills and terraced fields to reach Chichila, a small mountain village and the starting point of the trek.
Begin your trek through lush forested trails and small settlements. After some ascents and descents, arrive at Num, perched on a ridge with sweeping views of the valley below.
Descend steeply to the Arun River and cross a suspension bridge before climbing up to Seduwa. The route takes you through bamboo forests and local farms.
Today’s trail gently ascends through rhododendron forests and traditional villages. Reach Tashigaon, the last settlement before entering the higher Himalayan region.
The trail climbs steeply through dense forest to Khongma Danda. This is a challenging day but offers incredible views of the surrounding peaks. Overnight at a scenic ridge.
Spend the day acclimatizing to the altitude. Explore nearby viewpoints or rest and prepare for the crossing of high passes ahead.
A long and rewarding day as you cross several passes, including the iconic Shipton La. The trail is rugged but offers panoramic Himalayan views. Descend to Dobate for the night.
The trail descends through rhododendron forests and river valleys before reaching the beautiful yak pasture of Yangri Kharka.
Continue through alpine landscapes, passing waterfalls, grazing yaks, and prayer stones. The air gets thinner as you approach Langmale Kharka.
This is the highlight of the trek. Hike to Makalu Base Camp with stunning views of Mt. Makalu (8,485m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world. Explore the base camp surroundings and take in the awe-inspiring scenery.
After enjoying sunrise and photography at the base camp, retrace your steps down to Yangri Kharka, enjoying the changing landscapes.
Descend further through alpine meadows and forests, stopping once again at the lovely village of Seduwa for an overnight stay.
Return to Num and drive back to Tumlingtar, where your trek concludes. Celebrate your adventure with the Champawati Tours team.
Fly back to Kathmandu. Depending on your flight schedule, you can do some last-minute shopping or sightseeing before being transferred to the airport for your onward journey. Champawati Tours will ensure a smooth and comfortable farewell.
